I’ve got plain white walls in my apartment and I’m trying to find alternatives to painting them as I am not allowed to do anything to the walls that would be considered permanent such as painting, or putting up wallpaper. I’m not looking for decorating tips on how to liven up the space with furniture or accessories, I’m just hoping that there is some sort of alternative to paint that gives the impression of the walls being painted. Thanks!
Ummm..this is tough. You can’t paint, hang wall paper or liven anything up with accessories and furniture and want a new "paint" look to the walls. Hmmmmm….?
Try "big" monochrome art panels.

A bloody great tapestry to cover the wall.

In most apartments you’re not allowed to paint the walls- however…you still can. Only- when you move out, you’re paint the wall back to it’s original color.

Put up something transparent on the walls and paint over that e.g. thin sheets of perspex.
Ignore the ristrictions and paint the walls anyway. You have to ask yourself if the punishment for this ‘crime’ is worth the price of living in an environment with plain walls. Only you know how long you intend to remain in the place; if this is a very long time (*and* you can be sure other factors outside of your control won’t evict you), then I would go ahead and decorate.
Fixing things to walls may be an idea e.g. colourful material, pictures. What’s so bad about plain white walls anyway?
Note that *nothing* you do to the walls can be considered *permanent* i.e. you will, if you’re clever, always have a reasonable argument to defend yourself with e.g. wallpaper is ‘easily’ removeable, paint is ‘easily’ removeable (especially vinyl/waterbased paint).

you can paint the walls but you’ll have to repaint when you move to put the walls back to the original color. the same with wallpaper. just take it down. how about a great pre-pasted border? buy one that is easy to remove. if you don’t damage the walls removing the border clean up should be pretty easy. a collage of pictures mixed with a ew small shelves with small keepsakes will work too

A trick I learned while my husband was in the Army was to hang fabric like wallpaper, using liquid starch. It peels off very easily when you want and the wall can be cleaned with a damp sponge when you take it down, with no damage at all.
Here’s the link to the instructions:

Military quarters have white walls and they can’t be painted or changed in any way, so many military wives put up fabric like this. You can do an accent wall or the whole room, with pattened fabric or a solid color. And, the fabric can be washed and reused again after you move.

You could build large frames, similar to an artist’s canvas, and cover them with a fabric you like or cheap fabric dyed to the color you want. they are lightweight and you can put them on the walls. They will look like large artwork and cover a big area. you could get creative and make your own abstract art by painting some design on these large frames.
Another idea is to put a lot of things up next to the wall that help hide it such as very large plants with lots of leaves, a decorative folding screen, bookshelf, etc. This will help detract from all the white on the walls. Also using floor length curtains on your windows in a color other than white will help break up the constant white of the walls.
OR you could use the white as a color scheme and do lots of white on white decorating.
These are my suggestions. Best wishes!
