  • Amedeo Modigliani Paintings

Posted by admin on March 7th, 2010 and filed under paintings | 9 Comments »

Amedeo Modigliani was born in Livorno (Leghorn) on 12 July 1884 into a rich merchant family. Versed in literature and art at an early age, Modigliani took his first lessons in drawing and painting between 1898 and 1900 at Guglielmo Micheli’s studio. Modigliani was particularly fond of the Italian Early Renaissance. In 1902 Modigliani shared a studio in Florence with Oscar Ghilia and became a pupil at the free school for drawing from the nude. A year later Modigliani transferred to the Venice Academy, where he spent a great deal of time studying the works of the Old Masters and became familiar with international movements in art.
Modigliani went to Paris in 1906 to study at the private Colarossi Academy. In 1907 he met a young physician, Paul Alexandre, who was the first person to promote his work. Alexandre not only bought paintings and drawings of Modigliani’s; he also helped to arrange the artist’s first commissions. That same year Modigliani showed work at the Salon d’Automne and a year later at the Salon des Indépendents. The few pictures by Modigliani to have survived from that period reveal the influence of the Fauves, Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso and Cézanne. Paul Alexandre introduced Modigliani to the sculptor Constantin Brancusi and Modigliani began to sculpt under his influence but he gave up sculpture in 1914/15 to devote himself to painting. The same salient features are common to both Modigliani’s sculpture and his painting: despite mask-like stylization, a poignant grace and spirituality inform Modigliani’s heads. His lasting fame rests on the portraits of artists he did after 1914.
On the outbreak of the First World War, Modigliani volunteered for service but was exempted for health reasons: two severe attacks of tuberculosis had left him weakened for the rest of his life. Modigliani began to work with the art dealer Paul Guillaume and was also supported by the Polish poet Léopold Zborovski and his wife, doing many portraits of both. Modigliani’s first one-man show was opened by the Galerie Berthe Weill on 3 December 1917 but was closed after only a few hours because his nudes caused a public scandal. Modigliani left Paris while it was under German siege in 1918 and went to Nice with his mistress, Jeanne Hébuterne. There he did some of his best known pictures and some of his few landscapes. A daughter was born to him in Nice. In May 1919 Modigliani returned to Paris and went to England several times, thus ensuring the successful sale of his work there. Early in 1920, however, Modigliani again fell ill of tuberculosis and died in Paris on 24 January.

How come there are very Expensive Paintings but they are really Ugly?

Posted by admin on February 27th, 2010 and filed under paintings | 6 Comments »

It’s like a work of a child? What makes a painting really expensive? I know that the paintings of nature and are really pretty should be expensive. But there are paintings that are really ugly and they look like they were painted by a child but why are they so expensive and valuable?

I’m going to hope you’re trolling here, but I’ll take the risk that you aren’t.

First off, I’ll concede that the art market sometimes makes no sense, and the price of work often does not reflect its true value. But I’ll instead focus on why unpretty paintings not of nature are critically well regarded, rather than highly priced.

Beauty is a difficult notion to pin down, and a very large number of people in the art world aren’t very interested in it to begin with, and among those who are its not definite that their tastes will reflect your own.

Some people see the world as ugly, some people have something ugly inside them to express, some people want to mock traditional notions of beauty. Some people who paint like children do so because they become so frustrated with the drudgery of overly academic teaching that they want to move as far away from it as possible. Some people want to explore things they find fascinating but that are not traditionally beautiful.

As to why this is well regarded: If people find that this ‘unpretty’ piece of work reflects something they feel or think, or even just that it expresses well an interesting thought or feeling, or is looking at something in a new, clever or original way they are likely to respond well to it. If this happens with enough people, including influential critics and collectors and so on, then the work will become valuable.

This is the best I can do. I suspect I find a lot of the paintings you don’t like quite beautiful, or maybe if they aren’t beautiful I empathise with something angry or inquisitive or profound they have to say, so I might not be as much help as I’d like to be.

    Hope this helpz.

Gerhard Richter: Paintings from Private Collections

Posted by admin on February 23rd, 2010 and filed under paintings | 19 Comments »

http://www.vernissage.tv | German painter Gerhard Richter is one of the most important artists of our time. His works are represented in all the important museums and collections. So it’s no surprise that apart from the lenders a lot of major collectors and art professionals such as Sam Keller, Erich Marx, Klaus Staeck, Alfred Paquement, Armin Zweite, Peter Weibel, and Kasper König attended the opening reception of the exhibition “Gerhard Richter. Paintings from Private Collections” at Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden. At the Frieder Burda Museum in Baden-Baden, approximately sixty works from important private collections — Böckmann (Berlin), Ströher (Darmstadt) and Frieder Burda, complemented by works in the artist’s own possession — offer a look at more than forty years of painting that reflects on both the history of post-war Germany and on the medium of painting. Impressions from the opening with brief excerpts from the speeches of Frieder Burda and Norbert Lammert, President of the German Bundestag, January 18, 2008. A catalogue is available: Gerhard Richter. Bilder aus privaten Sammlungen.

How do you get the rights to images of famous paintings?

Posted by admin on February 21st, 2010 and filed under paintings | 1 Comment »

I’m interested in making prints of some famous paintings (particularly those done be Rene Magritte). Poster websites sell them, and I’m wondering how they got the rights to do so. I just want to make some for my own personal use. How and why are they able to access high res files of these works?

Museums (or private collectors) that own the works may license out the rights to produce images. In fact, the copyright on any work of art produced before 1923 has expired, but museums retain the rights to their own photographs/reproductions of a work or may license these.

So, if you’re making prints of a work created before 1923, and they are for personal use only, you don’t have to worry about the rights.

What kind of camera is suitable for documenting paintings?

Posted by admin on February 19th, 2010 and filed under paintings | 3 Comments »

I do professional work, so I would like to get a professional camera to document my paintings. I was referred to the Canon Rebel XS, but I’m not sure. It seems a bit too pricey. Any suggestions?

It is not a matter of the camera as surely as it is a matter of the correct lighting. Paintings should be flooded with general light shining from 45 degree angles to the plane on the canvas to eliminate or deminish glare and hot spots. Camera flash lighting will simply produce exteme glare. Beyond that (unless youre planning to use the file to make giclee prints) the pixel count of almost any camera will be plenty high for portfolio, gallery and client consideration.
I use a Canon Rebel, too, but mainly for typical photography, not documentation.
